A CARNELIAN INTAGLIO OF A HEAD OF A SATYR, 1ST-2ND CENTURY AD - An interesting intaglio showing the head of a bearded Satyr facing left looking at two stars and a tree on the left hand side of the composition. Deep orange carnelian, slightly oxidised. An interesting and enigmatic subject is shown on this intaglio. It might well be a punning type alluding to the name of the owner. These subjects were popular in Republican times when various subjects were used to allude to personal names. 14 by 11 mm. PROVENANCE From a European collection formed in the 1980's.
