A ROMAN CARNELIAN INTAGLIO SHOWING AN EAGLE, SCORPION, ZEUS AMMON AND SERAPIS, 1ST-2ND CENTURY AD - A Roman Carnelian Intaglio showing an Eagle, Scorpion, Zeus Ammon and Serapis. A very fine Roman carnelian intaglio showing an eagle with spread wings upon a scorpion, flanked by the profile busts of Zeus Ammon and Serapis. Above the centre is a lunate moon flanked by two stars. A beautifully rendered intaglio showing a lot of detail for the compact composition. The imperial eagle suggests a member of the military was the owner and the Egyptian deities were very popular with soldiers throughout the empire. 11.5 by 8.5 mm. PROVENANCE From a European collection formed in the 1980's.
