A fascinating letter by Rav Eliezer Rabinowitz, lived 1859 to 1924, was one of the sages

of his generation, his great wisdom was known  and as a result he was approached to deal with complicated decisions onTorah laws, attended the rabbinical conferences in St. Petersburg that discussed the needs of the generation. In his young years he became known as the "Genius from Kiev" and studied in Slutsk with the "Beit Halevi" and at the Yeshiva of Volozhin. His son in law Rabbi Yeruham Leib, "the Gadol of Minsk, inherited his place in the city's rabbinate. His name was known in his generation as one of the geniuses of Lithuania, and he too, like his father-in-law, was referred to in his life as the "Gadol of Minsk." Remains of his Torah innovations were secretly smuggled from Russia and printed in the book "Mishnat Eliezer".

In this letter Rav Rabinowitz complains about the situation of the rabbinate in his time emphasizing the influence of wealth and power. He also tells about Rav Itzele of Ponevezh who was offered to move to the Yeshiva of Telz but in the end stayed in Ponevezh In the of the letter he writes that he is looking for a bridegroom for his daughter being aware that circumstances do not allow to choose somebody who will be dedicated to study Tora only.
