Antique American Empire Cherry Four-Drawer Chest of Drawers - An American Empire period chest of drawers dating to approximately 1830-1840. The piece is constructed with cherry as the primary wood, displaying a tight grain and warm reddish-orange patina, while the top surface exhibits a well-defined cathedral grain pattern. Secondary woods visible in the drawer interiors and sides are consistent with white pine or poplar. The chest features a four-drawer configuration with a deep, overhanging top drawer positioned above three slightly recessed, graduated drawers. The structure is supported by massive, deeply turned columnar pilasters at the front corners, which terminate in heavy matching turned feet. Drawer construction includes hand-cut through-dovetails with irregular spacing and sizing. The drawers are fitted with internal locks and simple inset metal escutcheons. Hardware consists of period-appropriate turned wooden mushroom-style knobs. The drawer interiors contain several later-added decorative paper linings. No maker's marks or signatures are visible.
