American Empire Cherry Four Drawer Chest, handcut dovetails - An American Empire four-drawer chest, dating to the second quarter of the 19th century, circa 1830-1840. The piece is constructed from solid cherry with a warm reddish-brown finish and fine grain. The form features a rectangular top over a deep, overhanging top drawer. Below are three recessed, graduated drawers flanked by architectural pilasters with octagonal, faceted shafts and turned capitals and bases. The chest is supported by four turned and tapered feet. The drawer interiors are constructed of a secondary light-colored softwood, likely pine or poplar, and feature hand-cut dovetail joinery. The drawers are fitted with eight brass batwing-style pulls with bail handles and four small brass escutcheons. No maker marks, labels, or stamps were observed.
