Constructed from brass or bronze with a prominent deep red glass globe. The robust frame features a protective cage around the globe and a sturdy carrying handle. Engraved markings on the frame include ”PATENTED JAN-1-89”, ”MCH. 24-9”, and ”MCH. 21-9”, indicating patent dates from the late 19th century, specifically 1889. A copper-toned plaque attached to the base bears the inscription ”P-H&L-Co”.
