Late 19th / Early 20th Century Cairns & Brother 'High Eagle' Leather Fire Helmet, Mayville F.D. No. 1 - A Cairns 8 Comb Late 19th / Early 20th Century Cairns & Brother 'High Eagle' leather fire helmet. This vintage American firefighter's helmet is primarily constructed from black leather with a wide, embossed brim and features a bronze or brass-toned eagle finial at the crown. The front shield is embossed with the letters (Mayville) above a large, stylized white number ”1”, and ”F.D.” below. An internal circular metal tag identifies the manufacturer as ”CAIRNS & BROTHER, MFRS & SUPPLIES, FIREMEN'S EQUIPMENT, NEW YORK”. A faint impressed mark under the eagle finial appears to read ”S. PAWUS CO”.
