Batak Ritual Container with Carved Ancestral Figure Stopper and Engraved Script - A single Southeast Asian ritual container or storage vessel, likely originating from the Batak people of Sumatra, Indonesia. The object comprises a cylindrical body and a removable stopper/lid. The stopper is carved from dark wood, featuring a stylized human or ancestral figure head, exhibiting a rich, dark patina. The body of the vessel is constructed from light-colored bamboo, terminated at the base with a separate ferrule made of dark wood or horn. The surface of the bamboo is covered in extensive, finely incised markings. One side features decorative bands surrounding zoomorphic figures, identified as lizards or crocodiles. The remainder of the circumference contains detailed columns of Batak script written within a rigid grid pattern, suggesting content related to a calendar, divination text, or medicine formulae (pustaha content). The stopper is secured to the body by a thin green cord.
