19th c. Excorcism Spanish Colonial Retablo on Tin Depicting Saint Camillus de Lellis - A traditional devotional painting, known as a retablo, executed on a rectangular tin plate. The scene depicts Saint Camillus de Lellis, identifiable by his black habit bearing the red cross of the Camillians, acting as the advocate of the dying. The saint is shown defending a figure on a yellow bed from surrounding demonic entities, including figures of Death and various devils attempting to claim the soul. An angel is present, offering spiritual aid. The composition is highly complex, featuring multiple figures and a dramatic confrontation between good and evil forces. An incomplete inscription runs along the lower edge, reading ”SN CAMILO DE LELLIS ABOGADO DE DE,” confirming the subject matter. The style is consistent with Spanish Colonial folk art.
