Late 19th Century Catholic Indulgence Crucifixion Shadow Box Shrine Dated 1877 - A single late 19th-century Catholic devotional box shrine or tableau, often referred to in the market as an Indulgence Shadow Box. The piece is housed within a deeply carved, ornate gilded frame executed in a Neo-Baroque style, likely constructed of wood and composition material. The interior features a three-dimensional arrangement centered on the Crucifixion, with a gilded figure of the Corpus Christi affixed to a reddish cross, topped by the inscription ”INRI.” The cross is surrounded by numerous gilded elements representing the Arma Christi (Instruments of the Passion), set against a sepia-toned printed or lithographic background depicting the scene of Calvary. The interior scene is bordered by a ruffled white textile lining. A small plaque at the base provides the specific context and date, reading: ”Thy Kingdom Come. 100 DAYS' INDULGENCE EACH TIME (PIUS IX, 14TH JUNE, 1877.).”
