19th Century Mexican Retablo Depicting Saint Francis - A 19th Century Mexican religious folk art retablo painting executed on a tin substrate, depicting a bearded male figure identified through market consensus as Saint Francis of Assisi or a related anchorite figure. The saint is shown in a three-quarter bust view, wearing a dark habit with hands clasped in prayer. A shepherd's crook or staff is visible over the right shoulder. Faint red lettering, possibly reading ”SALV...” or ”SAVI...”, is partially visible within a burst of light in the lower left quadrant of the image field. The retablo is housed in a substantial, dark, glossy wood outer frame with a narrower, distressed off-white inner liner. The reverse features a sealed brown paper backing with a partial paper label indicating ”ART GALLERY / R. WOOLL... TOOL, IL.” Width approximately 14.5 inches.
