Two Victorian Personal Items Including a Checkerboard Inlaid Box and a Tinted Portrait in Thermoplastic Case - This lot consists of a rectangular lidded box and a circular photograph case, both dating to the mid-to-late 19th century. The rectangular box is constructed from a dark material, likely horn or lacquered wood, and features a lid with an inlaid geometric checkerboard pattern of light-toned diamonds, possibly mother-of-pearl or shell, within a thin border. The circular photograph case is made of molded dark thermoplastic composition, such as gutta-percha, and features a decorative gold-toned metal sunburst inlay on the lid. The interior of the case contains a bust-length portrait of a woman with dark hair and a lace collar. The image is hand-tinted with pink highlights on the cheeks and is housed behind glass within a gold-toned metal preserver frame. No maker marks are visible on either item.
