Item Overview

Description:

Mexican .970 Silver Inlay Turtle Brooch
This animal motif brooch is designed in the form of a turtle. The piece is constructed from a silver base with a yellow gold-toned wash. The turtle carapace features a geometric inlay of possibly natural lapis lazuli, displaying a deep blue color with characteristic white and gray mottling. The reverse of the brooch is incised with the mark 970, which indicates a silver purity higher than standard .925 sterling silver. This style of stone inlay and high-purity metal is characteristic of mid-20th-century artisanal jewelry from the Taxco region of Mexico. The reverse features a horizontal pin stem secured by a rotating safety clasp.

Approximately 1.5 inches in length.

The brooch is in good vintage condition. The metal on the reverse shows significant surface wear, tarnish, and a mottled dark patina consistent with age and use. The lapis lazuli inlays are intact with no missing sections, though they show minor surface abrasions and natural pitting under magnification. The pin mechanism is functional.
