1858 Erie Railroad Savona NY Ledger Repurposed as Victorian Advertising Scrapbook - This volume is a mid-19th-century manuscript ledger from the Buffalo, New York and Erie Rail Road, originally used at the Savona, New York station and later repurposed as a Victorian-era advertising scrapbook. The ledger contains handwritten records of ticket sales dating from July 1, 1858, to January 8, 1861, under the agency of H. H. Haile. Destinations recorded in the manuscript entries include Bath, Buffalo, Corning, Rochester, and Avoca. The scrapbook portion, dating primarily to the 1880s, features a diverse collection of chromolithographed trade cards and woodcut illustrations pasted over and alongside the railroad records. Notable advertising includes Peninsular Stoves, Red Cross Stoves and Ranges, Sterling Stoves, and Clarks O.N.T. Spool Cotton. Patent medicine ephemera is present for Parkers Ginger Tonic, Wistars Balsam of Wild Cherry, Fowlers Chilblain Cure, and Kendalls Spavin Cure. The volume also contains a satirical political cartoon featuring Grover Cleveland and Thomas Hendricks regarding Capadura cigars, an 1883 Mrs. Winslows calendar, a promotional voucher for Garsons Clothiers of Rochester designed to resemble Austrian currency, and an original photograph of two men in a wrestling pose.
