Bidspirit auction | Large Polychrome Decorated Earthenware Vase
Large Polychrome Decorated Earthenware Vase in the Egyptian Amarna Style - This large ovoid earthenware vessel is decorated in the Egyptian New Kingdom Amarna style, featuring multiple horizontal registers of hand-painted polychrome motifs. The decorative program utilizes a palette of terracotta red, blue, and cream against a dark grey-to-black ground. Specific decorative elements include bands of stylized lotus leaves or palmettes, scrolling waves, zig-zags, and interlocking geometric fretwork. The vessel tapers to a short, slightly flared neck and rim, with the interior of the rim finished in a dark, slightly metallic-lustre slip. The base is flat and unglazed. On the side of the body, there are handwritten characters in black ink that appear to be the number 10 over a horizontal line with the number 4 below, likely serving as an old inventory or lot number. No factory marks or maker signatures are present. Height: Approximately 11 1/4 inches Rim Diameter: Approximately 4 inches.
