Collins and Co. No. 1005 Engineer Bolo Machete with Embossed Leather Scabbard - A Collins and Co. No. 1005 engineer bolo machete featuring a single-edged steel blade with a pronounced curve that broadens toward the tip. The hilt is constructed with two dark contoured grip scales, likely horn or hardwood, secured to the full tang with three brass pins. The accompanying leather scabbard is decorated with embossed scrollwork and features a metal throat and drag. The scabbard reverse includes a worn leather belt loop. The blade is stamped with a circular maker mark for Collins and Co. Hartford No. 1005. The scabbard is embossed with the Legitimus crown and hammer trademark and the unit designation A CO 301 ENG, corresponding to the 301st Engineers. A yellowed adhesive label on the scabbard throat contains handwritten text attributing the piece to the U.S. Army 1898 Spanish American War.
