Victorian Silk and Velvet Commemorative Crazy Quilt New York Dated 1888 - A single late Victorian-era crazy quilt featuring a traditional patchwork design of irregularly shaped fabric scraps. The construction consists of assorted patches in silk, velvet, satin, and brocade hand-sewn onto a foundation. The seams are heavily embellished with various hand-embroidered decorative stitches including feather, herringbone, and cross-stitching in multicolored threads. The design incorporates several large fan motifs situated in the corners and along the edges. The quilt is finished with a braided cord trim and a gold-toned quilted fabric reverse. The piece contains several commemorative and identifying elements. Embroidered names include FRANK, MARY, and PEARLEY. One patch consists of a printed yellow silk ribbon inscribed JULY 4TH 1888 DETECTIVES NO. 1 N. Y. A white fabric documentation tag from the Museum of American Folk Art is attached to the reverse, identifying the piece as part of The New York Quilt Project (1988-1991) with the handwritten reference ECH-47 and date 10-14-89. 72 inches x 58 inches.
