Mahogany Chippendale Style Fretwork Mirror with Carved Gilt Phoenix - This single wall mirror is designed in the Chippendale style, featuring a mahogany frame with elaborate scrolled fretwork at the crest and apron. The rectangular mirror opening is bordered by a double line of light-wood stringing inlay and an inner gilded wooden slip decorated with a hand-carved repeating wave pattern. Centered at the top of the arched cresting is a prominently carved and gilded bird motif, identified as a phoenix or eagle. The construction of the reverse shows rough-hewn wooden backing boards secured by various nails, including hand-forged examples. The back displays historical repairs, including additional support blocks glued to the reverse of the fretwork for reinforcement. A twisted wire is attached for hanging purposes.
