University of Vienna. Medical and Obstetric Diploma for Julius Heitzmann. 1871. (Signed) - This is an original medical and obstetric diploma issued by the University of Vienna (Universitate Vindobonensi), dated February 28, 1871. The document is a single sheet of vellum, folio in size, featuring printed Latin text with manuscript completions in ink. It was awarded to Julius Heitzmann (1847-1922), conferring the titles of Medicinae Doctorem (Doctor of Medicine) and artis obstetriciae Magistrum (Master of Obstetric Arts). The document is hand-signed by university officials J. M. Chrastina (Decanus Collegii Doctorum), C. Braun (Carl Braun von Fernwald, Decanus Collegii Professorum), and Rudolphus Herz (Notarius). Attached to the bottom by a yellow and black braided cord is a large red wax seal housed in a two-piece turned wooden skippet. The seal depicts a central figure surrounded by the inscription SIGILLUM FACULTATIS MEDICAE UNIVERSITATIS VINDOBONENSIS. The reverse of the vellum contains an extensive manuscript inscription in German providing biographical data for the recipient, Julius Heitzmann, identifying him as the author of the Heitzmann Atlas, and for the dean, Carl Braun von Fernwald (1822-1891).
