Elizabethan Manuscript Vellum Indenture. Andreas Giver of Thaxted, Essex. June 8, 1582. - A 16th-century English manuscript vellum deed, written in Latin and dated June 8, 1582, during the 24th year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The document is a single sheet of parchment featuring a professional court hand typical of the late Tudor period. It identifies the principal party as Andreas Giver de Thaxsted in Com Essex Husbandman (Andrew Giver, a husbandman from Thaxted, County of Essex) and mentions Johanne uxori mee (Joan, my wife). The document is an indenture, opening with the formula Omnibus xpi fidelibus ad quos hoc presens scriptum indentatum pervenerit. A single pendant dark brown wax seal is attached to the base by a parchment tag through a slit in the folded bottom margin or plicature. The verso contains later English manuscript docketing identifying the document as a Deed of possession and includes the name William. The text includes standard legal phrasing such as Habendum et Tenendum and concludes with the regnal year dating formula.
