Bloys van Treslong, O. and Vatican. Two Historical Documents: 1779 Dutch ALS and 1868 Vatican Certificate. 1779-1868. - This lot consists of two distinct historical documents. The first is an 18th-century autograph letter signed (ALS) in Dutch, dated June 29, 1779. The correspondence originated from Oud Klingendaal, located near The Hague, and was addressed to Mr. Ermerins, who served as the Secretary of the city of Veere. The exterior of the folded paper serves as the address panel, displaying a black s'Haage postal stamp, a manuscript red numeral 6 representing the postal rate, and an intact red wax armorial seal on the reverse. The letter is signed by O. Bloys van Treslong. The second item is a 19th-century ecclesiastical certificate of authenticity issued by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, dated 1868. This document is a printed Latin form with manuscript completions, certifying that a replica of the Veil of Veronica (Sudarium) was touched to the sacred relics of the Sudarium, the True Cross, and the Holy Lance held within the Basilica. The manuscript additions identify the 23rd year of the pontificate of Pope Pius IX and include the signatures of J. Moi and E. Capello. A red wax seal is present at the lower margin.
