Mounted Red Wax Impression of the Great Seal of the High Council of Holland Dated 1589 - This item is a mounted red wax-style impression of the Great Seal (Groot Zegel) of the High Council (Hooge Raad) of Holland. The circular seal depicts a central enthroned figure seated beneath an ornate Renaissance canopy, flanked by figures and heraldic-style supporters. The impression is mounted on a square piece of textured tan fiberboard. The mount features several hand-inked inscriptions in Dutch and Latin that provide historical context. The top left of the mount is inscribed A 1589, referring to the date of the original seal. The top right is inscribed Hooge Raad above Gr: Zegl. (Great Seal). The bottom left is marked R= SIGILLVM-JVS: IN HOLLANDIA, and the bottom right is marked TITIAE-SVPR- CONCILLII. The raised characters in the circular legend of the seal itself confirm the identification as the Sigillum Justitiae Supremae Concilii in Hollandia, or the Seal of the Supreme Council of Justice in Holland. The seal includes a rounded protrusion at the top where a cord would traditionally pass through. Mount: 4.25 inches x 4.25 inches Seal: 3.5 inches diameter.
