1790 New York State Land Patent Signed by Governor George Clinton - This 18th-century historical document is a manuscript and printed land patent on parchment issued by the State of New York. Dated July 8, 1790, and recorded on November 15, 1790, the document grants six hundred acres of bounty lands to John Stoutter. The land is identified as Lot number Six in the Township of Cincinnatus, then located in Montgomery County and currently part of Cortland County, New York. These grants were issued as compensation for military service during the Revolutionary War. The document features a large calligraphic heading reading The People and includes specific clauses reserving gold and silver mines to the state and requiring actual settlement within seven years. The patent is signed by George Clinton in his capacity as the first Governor of New York. Clinton also served as the fourth Vice President of the United States. It is additionally signed by Lewis A. Scott as Secretary of State. Affixed to the document by a woven cord is the original pendant wax seal, representing the first Great Seal of the State of New York adopted in 1777. The obverse of the seal depicts a sun rising over mountains with the motto EXCELSIOR and the date 1777, surrounded by the legend THE GREAT SEAL OF THE STATE OF NEW-YORK.
