19th Century Wax Seal Impression Specimen Prior Dirc Hamer Haarlem 1432 Matrix - This item is a sigillography specimen consisting of a green wax seal impression mounted on a square tan card. The impression is in a vesica shape and features a central scene of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary to Elizabeth under a Gothic architectural canopy. Below the main scene is a small circular inset depicting a cleric or saint. The border of the seal contains a circumscription in Gothic minuscule script. The mounting card contains several handwritten ink annotations. The top left corner is marked: A degree 1432. / Prior Zeg- / von / DIRC / HAMER. The top right corner is marked: Regulieren / convent. der / HAARLEM. The bottom of the card is inscribed: R. / ...REGULAREM PROPE HAERLEM - / DOM- VICITATIO IS - MARIE. These inscriptions identify the seal as that of Prior Dirc Hamer of the Regular Canons convent near Haarlem, Netherlands. While the original matrix is dated 1432, this wax cast is a 19th-century collector's or scholarly specimen used for the study of historical seals.
