1962 Battle of Antietam Civil War Centennial .999 Pure Silver Commemorative Medal by Casimir Kraczkowski - A large commemorative .999 fine silver medal issued in 1962 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam. The piece was sculpted by artist Casimir Kraczkowski, whose signature is visible on the obverse to the right of General Lee's portrait. It was produced for the American Re-Collection Corp, as indicated by the ARCC © 1961 marking on the reverse. The medal was struck by The Robbins Company of Attleboro, Massachusetts, identified by the winged R hallmark on the edge. The obverse features high-relief bust-style portraits of Union General George B. McClellan and Confederate General Robert E. Lee, inscribed with their names and the designations BATTLE OF ANTIETAM and SHARPSBURG. The reverse commemorates the CIVIL WAR CENTENNIAL with the dates 1862 and 1962. The central motif includes a 34-star Union flag, a Confederate battle flag, a field cannon, a military drum, and a soldier's kepi. The edge is stamped PURE SILVER .999 and is serial numbered 716. The medal is secured within a square, four-screw acrylic display block. Diameter: 3 inches (76mm).
