Hamilton Watch Co. Grade 940 21 Jewel Railroad Grade 18 Size Gold Filled Pocket Watch - An antique 18 size railroad grade pocket watch manufactured by the Hamilton Watch Co. of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, circa 1902. The movement is a Grade 940 featuring 21 jewels, adjusted positions, and decorative damaskeening on the nickel plates. It is a manual wind, lever-set mechanism with movement serial number 264002. The watch is housed in an open-face gold-filled case manufactured by the Keystone Watch Case Co. under the J. Boss brand, guaranteed for 25 years, with case serial number 5528479. The double-sunk white porcelain enamel dial features bold black Arabic numerals, a sub-seconds dial at the 6 o'clock position, and a red outer minute track with five-minute markers. The hands are crafted from blued steel. The interior of the case back features several hand-scratched watchmaker service marks, including 6-64 and 4-58L. Diameter: approximately 2 inches (51 mm). The gold-filled case exhibits heavy wear with significant brassing where the gold layer has worn through to the base metal, particularly on the case back and bow. Verdigris is present on the bow. The porcelain dial shows several prominent hairline cracks radiating from the center arbor toward the 1 o'clock and 5 o'clock positions. The crystal has light surface scratches consistent with age and use. The movement appears visually clean; however, the watch has not been tested for mechanical functionality or timekeeping accuracy. Professional servicing is recommended.
