Grant engraved from a photograph by Brady, and various views of world cities visited during Grant's tour, such as Milan, Paris, and Thebes. The text covers Grant's military career and his subsequent travels around the world. The binding shows moderate shelf wear with rubbing to the boards and corners. There is significant fraying and cloth loss at the head and tail of the spine. The frontispiece tissue guard is foxed and displays damp staining with some transfer to the title page. The interior pages show light toning and occasional foxing throughout. The hinges are tender but the text block remains secure.
