Vintage Whitman's Salmagundi Chocolate Tin, Circa 1923 - This rectangular lithographed metal confectionery tin was produced for Whitman's Salmagundi chocolates by Stephen F. Whitman and Son, Inc. The exterior surfaces feature a comprehensive faux-mosaic pattern in an Art Nouveau style. The central panel of the lid displays a woman in profile with long blonde hair and ornate jewelry, reminiscent of the works of Alphonse Mucha. The color scheme consists primarily of gold and ochre tones, with decorative borders featuring red, green, and blue mosaic tiles. The brand name Whitman's Salmagundi is printed in script on the lower portion of the lid. The text 1 LB. NET is visible on the right side of the lid, and the copyright S. F. W. and S. INC. is located to the left of the central portrait. The back edge of the tin, near the hinges, is marked PATENTED FEBRUARY 27, 1923 TIN DECO. The interior has a gold-tone finish. Length: 7.5 inches Width: 4 inches Height: 2.375 inches. The tin is in good vintage condition with visible signs of age and use. The exterior shows moderate surface wear, including scuffing to the lithography, scratches, and small areas of surface oxidation or rust, primarily along the edges and base. The interior gold-tone finish remains bright but exhibits surface scratching and minor spotting. The hinges are intact and functional.
