Miniature Stenciled Stoneware Jug, Hawthorn Pottery Company, Hawthorn, Pennsylvania - This miniature stoneware jug is a product of the Hawthorn Pottery Company, which operated in Hawthorn, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. The vessel is finished in a light gray Bristol-style glaze featuring characteristic dark kiln-fired peppering throughout. The form includes a rounded shoulder, a single hand-applied loop handle, and a short cylindrical neck containing an aged cork. The front of the jug displays a two-line cobalt blue stencil that reads H. P. CO. over HAWTHORN, PA. The base shows faint, illegible impressed or incised marks. Height: 5 inches (including cork) Diameter: 3.75 inches. Good Condition. The glaze shows typical minor pitting and pops from the firing process. There are small chips and expected shelf wear around the foot rim. The body displays light overall surface staining.
