Antique Enterprise Manufacturing Co. The Champion Knife Improved Cast Iron Tobacco Cutter - Antique lever-action plug tobacco cutter manufactured by the Enterprise Manufacturing Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This model is identified by raised cast lettering as The Champion Knife Improved. The device consists of a heavy cast iron base and an arched frame that houses a rectangular steel cutting blade secured by two screws. A long, curved cast iron lever handle provides the mechanical advantage for slicing through pressed tobacco plugs. The piece features extensive cast markings including the manufacturer name and location on the frame and base. The underside of the base includes a patent date of January 20, 1885. Mold numbers 3020 and 3017 are visible on the casting. The cutter is currently mounted to a thick, weathered wooden block which provides a stable platform. Base length: 18.5 inches Frame height: 7.5 inches. The item is in original, unrestored condition. It exhibits a dark, aged patina with significant surface oxidation and rust present on the steel blade and various cast iron surfaces. There is accumulated dust and grime consistent with age and storage. The lever mechanism appears to be structurally complete and functional. The wooden mounting block shows heavy weathering, surface wear, and natural cracking.
