Antique T.C. Johnson Co. Cast Iron Lever-Action Tobacco Cutter, Quincy, Illinois, Patent 1875 - This is an antique lever-action plug tobacco cutter manufactured by the T.C. Johnson Co. of Quincy, Illinois. The tool is constructed from cast iron and features a decorative Victorian-style housing with raised scrollwork and a heart motif at the top. It is designed to be mounted to a counter or workbench via a pre-drilled hole in the flared end of its teardrop-shaped base. The mechanism consists of a long, curved lever handle that operates a vertical steel blade within a guide slot. The top of the lever handle is embossed with the text PATENTED DEC 7-1875. The underside of the base is marked with raised lettering that reads MFD BY T C JOHNSON CO QUINCY ILL. Height: 7 inches Width: 6.5 inches Base Length: 9.5 inches. The item is in fair to good antique condition. There is significant and widespread surface oxidation and rust across all cast iron components. Much of the original black japanned or painted finish has worn away, though some traces remain on the base. The lever mechanism is functional, allowing the blade to move through its intended travel. No cracks, breaks, or structural repairs are visible in the casting.
