US Model 1872 Cavalry Officer's Sword and Scabbard by Lombard and Co. - Based on design characteristics and manufacturer markings, this is a United States Model 1872 Cavalry Officer's sword and its original scabbard. The hilt is constructed of brass with a three-branch guard. The primary outboard branch is decorated with a cast, spread-winged eagle motif set above a semi-circular field of thirteen stars. The pommel is a stepped oval cap embellished with foliate scrollwork. The grip is wrapped in leather with recessed grooves, though the original wire binding is no longer present. The curved, single-edged steel blade features a single wide fuller extending approximately two-thirds of its length. The ricasso is etched with the mark of the retailer or maker: LOMBARD & CO NEW YORK N.Y. The accompanying metal scabbard features ornate brass furniture, including a decorative throat, two suspension ring bands with rings, and a drag. These brass fittings are decorated with cast foliate and floral patterns. The sword and scabbard are in used, antique condition. The brass hilt and scabbard fittings retain a dark, aged mustard-colored patina with some surface grime. The leather wrap on the grip is intact but shows significant wear and is missing the original wire binding. The steel blade is heavily oxidized and pitted throughout its length, obscuring any potential original etched decorations. The scabbard body is structurally sound but displays a dark patina with significant surface oxidation and rust. One of the suspension rings is slightly distorted.
