An Archive of Civil War Military Draft Documents and Pioneer-Era Correspondence for the Williams and Thompson Families - This group of mid-19th-century American paper ephemera focuses on the Civil War draft in New York and pioneer life in the Minnesota Territory. The military component features three official documents related to Philander G. Williams of Steuben County, New York: a Notice of Enrollment dated July 5, 1864; a Certificate of Exemption for a Drafted Person on Account of Disability (Form 32) dated June 15, 1864, signed by Provost Marshal James H. Miller; and a printed instructional slip detailing draft options and the three hundred dollar commutation fee. The personal archive contains multiple handwritten letters and envelopes addressed to Robert Thompson or Robert S. Thompson in Addison, New York, spanning approximately 1855 to 1864. Notable among these are several letters from Austin, Mower County, Minnesota Territory, providing accounts of pioneer farming, crop yields, and settlement. Postal history includes 3-cent Washington red stamps and various circular date stamps including Austin M.T. and Addison N.Y. One yellow envelope features the printed letterhead of the U.S. Christian Commission. Also included is a worn Catholic religious booklet titled A General Catechism of the Christian Doctrine, published at 49 Mott Street, New York. Documents and letters show expected toning, foxing, and wear along fold lines. Some letters have small holes or tears at cross-folds. Envelopes exhibit rough openings, edge tears, and water staining. The religious booklet is in poor condition with heavily frayed covers, a damaged spine, and significant foxing throughout.
