Bidspirit auction | Antique American Hand-Stitched Puffy Square
Antique American Hand-Stitched Puffy Square Biscuit Quilt - This antique American textile is a hand-stitched puffy square quilt, frequently referred to as a biscuit quilt. The item is constructed from a grid of hundreds of individual fabric squares, each gathered and hand-pleated to produce a three-dimensional, dimensional effect. The patchwork incorporates a wide variety of scrap materials, including velvet, silk, corduroy, and various printed and plain cottons. Visible patterns across the squares include floral, striped, and polka-dot designs. The color palette is eclectic, featuring tones of deep red, navy blue, gold, burgundy, and tan. The reverse side reveals the individual square backings, which are primarily light-colored cottons and linens, joined together with visible hand-stitching. The edges are unfinished. Width: 55.5 inches Length: 45.5 inches. The quilt is in good antique condition with wear consistent with age. There is fraying and material deterioration to several of the silk and velvet squares. Moderate age-related discoloration and light staining are present on the reverse backing fabrics. The perimeter edges show loose threads and minor fraying.
