Hand Woven Tarahumara Indian Basket - This hand-woven basket is an example of Tarahumara (Raramuri) Indian craft from the Sierra Madre region of Mexico. The piece is constructed using a complex diagonal plaiting or twill weave technique, which is characteristic of indigenous basketry from this region. It features a globose form with a square-plaited base that transitions into a rounded body and terminates in a constricted rim. The material consists of split plant fibers, likely palm or sotol, woven in multiple layers to provide structural density and a textured surface. The interior of the basket contains a small piece of blue adhesive tape with the handwritten inventory number 17. Height: 2.75 inches Diameter: 4.25 inches. The basket is in fair to good antique condition. There is visible wear consistent with age and ethnographic use, including several broken and fraying weavers located on the lower body and near the base. The surface displays a natural aged patina with localized dust accumulation within the weave. The structural integrity of the vessel remains sound.
