Victorian School Still Life of Pansies, Late 19th Century - This oil on board painting presents a floral still life featuring an arrangement of pansies in shades of purple, yellow, and white. The composition includes flowers gathered in a shallow glass bowl and others scattered across a dark, reflective tabletop. The background is rendered in soft, muted tones of green and brown with delicate, wispy foliage. The work is executed in a late 19th-century Victorian style using blended brushwork to define the velvety texture of the petals. The painting is housed in a substantial gilded gesso and wood frame characterized by a wide cream-colored cove and ornate scrolled acanthus leaf moldings along the outer edge. No artist signature or date is visible on the front of the board. Width: 25.5 inches (overall frame). The painting displays visible age-related craquelure across the entire surface. There are several small, scattered paint losses, primarily concentrated in the upper left quadrant of the board. A layer of accumulated surface dirt and grime is present. The ornate frame exhibits widespread cracking, surface wear, and several minor losses to the gilded gesso moldings, particularly at the corners and along the raised decorative elements.
