Evan R. Jones Pittston, PA Cobalt-Decorated Salt-Glazed Stoneware Cake Crock - This 19th-century salt-glazed stoneware cake crock was produced by the pottery of Evan R. Jones in Pittston, Pennsylvania. The vessel features a squat cylindrical form with an everted, rounded rim and two applied lug handles. The shoulder is accented with a single incised horizontal line. The front is decorated with a hand-painted, stylized floral motif in cobalt blue slip. The interior is finished with a dark brown slip glaze. The upper portion of the crock is impressed with a two-line maker mark reading EVAN R JONES over PITTSTON. PA. Height: 7 1/2 inches Diameter: 8 1/2 inches. The crock is in fair condition, characterized by a prominent vertical hairline crack originating at the rim and extending approximately halfway down the side of the body. There is generalized surface staining, minor pitting, and scattered iron spots (firing blebs) across the exterior and interior. The base displays light shelf wear and scattered staining consistent with age and domestic use.
