Mettlach Villeroy and Boch Tyrolean Marksman Beer Stein Model 1526 by Heinrich Schlitt - This lidded stoneware beer stein was manufactured by Villeroy and Boch at the Mettlach factory and features the Tyrolean Marksman design by the artist Heinrich Schlitt. The cream-colored ceramic body is decorated with transfer-printed and hand-colored scenes under a clear glaze. The central figure depicts a hunter in traditional Alpine dress, wearing a green Tyrolean hat with a Gamsbart and smoking a long huntsman pipe while carrying a rifle. The main illustration is signed H. Schlitt. Side vignettes show a mountain landscape with a chalet and men participating in target shooting practice. The upper rim near the handle is incised 1/2 L. The hinged pewter lid is embossed with a central target, crossed rifles, a hunter horn, and oak leaf swags, with the German inscription UB AUG UND HAND FURS VATERLAND. The lid is finished with a thumb lift in the form of a perched eagle. The underside of the base features an incised model number 1526 and Roman numeral II, alongside a stamped Mettlach abbey logo and the word GESCHUTZT. Capacity: 0.5 liter. The ceramic body exhibits fine, overall crazing consistent with age. There is minor surface staining and residue on the unglazed foot ring. The pewter lid shows a natural aged patina but is otherwise in good condition with a functional hinge. No chips, cracks, or repairs are visible.
