A Pair of French Porcelain Apothecary Jars Attributed to Paul Abadie of Limoges - A pair of matching cylindrical porcelain drug jars with stepped bases and shoulders, accompanied by domed lids featuring spherical gilded finials. The jars are decorated with hand-painted polychrome floral sprays, including roses and assorted wildflowers in shades of pink, orange, purple, and blue. Gilded scrolling vine borders accent the lids and the upper and lower sections of the bodies. The center of each jar displays a hand-painted label within a black rectangular frame, titled COCAINE (rendered with a diaeresis as COCAÏNE) and OPIUM respectively. The base of each jar features an underglaze blue mark consisting of the cursive initials P. A above a lozenge containing the number 4, attributed to the Limoges decorator Paul Abadie. Height: 4.5 inches. There is a chip located on the unglazed foot rim of one jar which is not visible when the item is upright. Both jars exhibit a fine vertical line on the body that appears to be a manufacturing blemish rather than a crack, as it does not penetrate through the porcelain. There is light surface wear throughout, including minor loss to the gilding on the finials and borders, along with scattered minor staining consistent with age and use.
