Antique American Hand-Quilted Shoo Fly Variation Scrap Quilt - This antique American pieced and hand-quilted cotton quilt is constructed in a 4x4 grid featuring sixteen Shoo Fly or Churn Dash variation blocks. The background of each block is made from a red calico fabric with a small black geometric scroll motif. The interior pieced triangles are composed of a wide variety of scrap fabrics, including cream-toned florals, brown calicos, geometric prints, stripes, and indigo blue shirtings. The blocks are joined by navy blue sashing featuring a white floral and dot discharge print. A notable maker's detail includes a make-do completion in the lower right corner and border where a tan floral printed fabric was substituted for the blue sashing. The quilt is finished with a narrow brown and white checkered binding that coordinates with the full brown and white checkered gingham backing. The construction is hand-pieced and hand-quilted with thin internal batting. Length: 84 inches Width: 79 inches. Fair to good antique condition. The quilt shows significant signs of age and heavy use. Several of the pieced triangles within the blocks exhibit heavy wear and shredding, with some fabric pieces missing entirely, revealing the internal batting. The navy sashing shows general fading and light thinning. The checkered backing has several prominent stains, including a large dark circular ink or dye stain and multiple large diffused brownish moisture stains. There is light overall surface soiling and general wear to the binding.
