1865 US Three Cent Nickel - 1865 US three-cent nickel coin struck at the Philadelphia Mint. This first-year-of-issue piece is composed of a copper-nickel alloy. The obverse features the Liberty Head design with a coronet and surrounding legend. The reverse features the Roman numeral III within a laurel wreath. Diameter: 17.9 mm. Circulated. The coin exhibits moderate wear throughout. High points on the Liberty head and wreath leaves show significant softening. Surfaces display numerous fine scratches and contact marks consistent with long-term circulation. Light gray toning is present in the recessed areas. No original mint luster remains.
