CA 1957 1-Cent Error Coin Struck on Split Planchet - This CA 1-cent coin dated 1957 is a mint error struck on a planchet that split prior to entering the coining press. The coin is composed of a bronze alloy. The obverse face displays prominent vertical striations and a rough, granular texture indicative of the internal metal grain exposed by the split, leaving only faint and distorted elements of the laureate bust of Queen Elizabeth II and segments of the legend DEI GRATIA RE visible. The reverse features the standard maple leaf design with a weak strike resulting from the insufficient thickness and mass of the split planchet. Visible reverse inscriptions include CENT, the date 1957, and partial letters ADA for Canada. The piece exhibits an overall brown toning. It is currently housed in a non-professional 2x2 cardboard flip with handwritten technical notations identifying the error and referencing other coins. The coin is fine for an error strike. It exhibits the expected heavy loss of detail characteristic of a strike on a split planchet. The surfaces show the original rough planchet texture on the obverse and light circulation wear on the reverse. No signs of cleaning or post-mint damage are visible.
