A Collection of US Five-Cent Coins including Silver War Nickels and Buffalo Nickels - A collection of US five-cent coins primarily featuring Jefferson nickels (KM# 192) and Buffalo nickels (KM# 134). The group includes several silver-alloy War Nickels (KM# 192a) struck between 1942 and 1945, which are identifiable by the prominent P and S mint marks located directly above the dome of Monticello on the reverse. These war nickels are composed of a 35 percent silver, 56 percent copper, and 9 percent manganese alloy. The standard Jefferson nickels in the collection are struck in a 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel alloy. Observed dates include 1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1954, 1960, 1961, 1964, 1970, 1979, 1980, 1984, and 1986. All coins feature smooth, plain edges. Circulated condition ranging from good to very fine. The coins exhibit varying degrees of surface wear, contact marks, and natural toning. The silver war nickels show characteristic dark oxidation and surface tarnish typical of the manganese-silver alloy. Buffalo nickels show significant wear on the high points of the design, consistent with heavy circulation.
