A Pair of US Barber Silver Half Dollars, 1899 and 1912-S - A pair of US Barber silver half dollars, consisting of one specimen dated 1899 and one specimen dated 1912. The 1899 coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and lacks a mint mark. The 1912 coin features an S mint mark on the reverse below the eagle, identifying it as a product of the San Francisco Mint. Both coins are struck in a 90 percent silver alloy. The obverse features the design by Charles E. Barber with the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST and thirteen stars. The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with a shield, holding an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOLLAR. The Barber half dollar series was produced by the US Mint between 1892 and 1915. Both coins are in heavily circulated condition, consistent with technical grades of About Good to Good. The coins exhibit significant wear on all high points, with Liberty's hair and the eagle's feathers showing substantial flattening. The inscription LIBERTY on the obverse headbands is completely worn away on both specimens. The 1899 coin possesses a dark grey, mottled patina and visible rim dings. The 1912-S coin shows a lighter grey color with numerous surface scratches, small nicks, and heavy circulation marks throughout the fields.
