LANDSCAPE WITH A RIDER - 1680–1720 Oil on canvas, 68.5×89 cm. Unframed. An example of a Dutch landscape ”pastiche”, which was highly prized by collectors in the 18th century. The composition draws on the celebrated models of Jan Wijnants, whose influence is particularly evident in the characteristic rendering of the solitary tree in the foreground with characteristic accents in impasto white. The staffage of a horseman bears the hallmarks of the school of Adriaen van de Velde. The pronounced, tarry-brown colour range and dramatic lighting shift the scene towards the work of Jan van der Bent. Condition C.
