NOCTURNE IN THE ALPS (EVENING AT THE FOUNTAIN) Oil on canvas, 34.5×49 cm (47×60 cm). Unsigned. The work is in good condition with slight patina and craquelure corresponding to its age. Mounted in an original, representative gilded frame with rich Rococo and floral ornament. The offered oil painting is an impressive example of Romantic landscape painting of the mid-19th century, focused on capturing mood and atmospheric phenomena. The scene depicts an evening view of a mountain village, where the dominant element is the architecture of a wooden Alpine building with an illuminated window, which introduces into the picture a sense of domestic calm and warmth. The composition is built on the contrast of light and shadow (chiaroscuro). The central source of light is a full moon that shines through clouds and illuminates in silver the mountain peaks in the background and the surface of the water in the fountain in the foreground, where small figures are present. The cold moonlight contrasts with the warm glow of the light in the window. Vertical accents in the form of tall trees and pointed towers (a church or chapel in the right part) lend the work dynamism and a spiritual dimension. The painterly handling is delicate, with an emphasis on the detailed rendering of architecture and natural elements, referencing the works of Christian E. B. Morgenstern. The painting is a typical example of the genre nocturne, which was a highly sought-after subject in the 19th century for its ability to evoke nostalgic emotions.
