A representative example of mature Belgian animalism of the 19th century, in which the legacy of the Dutch landscape tradition harmoniously blends with the emerging realism of the Barbizon type. The artist abandons strict academicism in favour of an atmospheric rendering of a pastoral idyll, which in the contemporary context of bourgeois society was understood as a counterbalance to ongoing industrialisation and a symbol of an unchanging natural order. The composition excels in its confident construction of spatial depth and masterful handling of diffuse light, which is not merely a technical device but the principal carrier of the mood of the entire scene. The placement of the small figure of a shepherdess in the left part of the composition is not incidental. In the 19th-century context, this ”staffage” serves a dual role: it gives the viewer a sense of scale for the landscape and at the same time introduces a human element, which for the bourgeois collector symbolised security and honest labour. Within Stocquart`s oeuvre, these multi-figure works (combining cattle, dogs and people) rank among the most valued, as they required a more complex compositional solution than simple portraits of individual cattle. The work thus remains an authentic imprint of an era that sought in art tranquillity, harmony and technical precision in the depiction of rural life. Condition A-B.
