Mounted in an original gilded profiled frame. An exceptional and representative example of European landscape painting of the second half of the 19th century, specifically of the so-called Oosterbeek School, which was the Dutch parallel of the French Barbizon. The artist concentrates on capturing the intimate relationship between man, animal, and nature in calm afternoon light. The composition is divided into two contrasting zones: the left side is formed by a darker forest mass with a path along which a figure with a dog walks, while the right side opens into an illuminated plain of pastures with grazing cattle and a low, brightened horizon. Meiners demonstrates here his typical sensitivity to atmospheric realism and detailed rendering of vegetation, especially the foliage of trees and the texture of grass in the foreground. The handling of light, which softly models the backs of the cows and filters through the clouds on the horizon, lends the scene depth and lyrical intensity. Condition A.
