BIRCH GROVE IN SPRING HAZE - German Neo-Impressionism (Weimar school) 1900–1910 Oil on heavy technical canvas (Segeltuch) with a regular, tightly woven coarse weave, 67×48 cm (73.5×54.5 cm). The work displays exceptional artistic as well as technical quality, which clearly sets it apart from ordinary Central European production. The work is executed on a unique type of heavy technical canvas with a regular weave, characterised by a complete absence of weaving faults (knots). This support was imported from large German or French dyeing centres and is absolutely unique in the Bohemian context. It is precisely this ”tight” structure without slack that enabled the artist to achieve an extremely plastic texture of the paint, which cooperates harmoniously with the regular grid of the canvas and creates an impression of vibrating light. The absolute consistency in the placement of colour dots and the choice of this specific support points to an artist who was in direct contact with the European Neo-Impressionist avant-garde. Similarly to Paul Baum or Curt Herrmann, the author of this work also perceived the painting as a ”constructed object”, where the technical quality of the support is just as important as the colour itself. The authorship of the work should be sought in the circle of painters who transformed French Divisionism into a Central European context. Stylistically and technically, the work converges most closely with these names: Paul Baum (1859–1932): A leading representative of German Pointillism, who was renowned precisely for the precision of his supports and a scientific approach to colour. Curt Herrmann (1854–1929): A painter who connected the German tradition with the most modern trends of the European avant-garde. Original gallery stretching on a wooden stretcher bar, set in a period gilded frame. This is a highly representative example of Central European Neo-Impressionism. Condition A.
