The landscape by Hugo Kovařík represents a typical example of the artist`s interest in motifs of the Czech countryside, captured in transformations of light and colour atmosphere. The composition is constructed in broadly conceived colour planes, in which strips of greenery, a light quarry wall, and a darker forest horizon alternate. Vertical accents of trees in the foreground rhythmise the pictorial space and deepen its perspectival effect. The painter works with a lively, impasto brushwork and a clear, light colourism based on the contrast of fresh green tones with warm ochre and yellow accents. The painting bears the marks of plein-air study, in which the immediate impression of light is more important than detailed description. Kovařík here builds on the tradition of Czech landscape Modernism, shaped by Post-Impressionism and an emphasis on the colour construction of the picture. Condition A.
